Clare Goyder

NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer

  • Salaried GP
  • Clinical tutor

I am a clinically-active academic GP in Oxford and a mixed methods researcher with over 15 years of experience. My work focuses on diagnosis in primary care. I have been an NIHR Academic Foundation Programme trainee, an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow and a Wellcome Trust Doctoral Fellow here in this department. My DPhil focused on improving the diagnosis of heart failure in primary care. I was the Principal Investigator on a study to assess the impact of point-of-care testing in primary care. I have also led projects on diagnostic error, the patient experience of heart failure diagnosis and the accuracy and acceptability of natriuretic peptide screening. I also co-led a public engagement project which created an art installation and digital interactive exhibition to capture individual experiences of living through Covid with diabetes.

My NIHR Academic Clinical Lectureship focuses on generating evidence to inform how early diagnosis can mitigate for health inequalities with a specific focus on heart failure. I’m co-Principal Investigator on the NIHR SPCR REDUCE-HF electronic health record OpenSAFELY study that will characterise who is most at risk of heart failure diagnosis in hospital, specifically in relation to understanding the intersect between health inequalities, long term conditions and social determinants of heath.  My overarching aim is to develop innovative, health technology driven solutions that facilitate early diagnosis in the most deprived and disadvantaged community populations.

I am a clinical tutor for year 3 medical students on the learning with patients course.

Clare is happy to hear from potential DPhil students who are interested in developing future projects in health inequalities, early diagnosis, health technologies and heart failure.
