The first seminar in the series was entitled 'The potential for wearable technology in ambulatory care: Isansys Patient Status Engine' and was given by Keith Errey from Isansys. The talk was followed by a demonstration of the technology and a panel discussion on the benefits of the device.
The patient status engine uses wireless technology to monitor the health of patients in six different ways:
- Heart rate
- Respiration rate
- Temperature
- Oxygen saturation
- Blood pressure
- Coma score
Each patient wears a patch which is embedded with electrodes to continuously monitor vital signs, then the data captured is displayed on a screen next to the patient. The system is entirely portable meaning that the device can be used either in hospital or at home with data always being available to employ continuous monitoring.
